Overview
The International Student Program at Mordialloc College is a well-established and successful program. We have welcomed many International students to our College over many years, from a diverse range of Asian and European countries.
International Students have been enrolled in all year levels at our College. We currently have students who live with parents or relatives approved by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). If required, the College finds homestay opportunities with local families for our independent senior students, enabling them to experience the “Aussie lifestyle” in safe and welcoming homes. Their English skills and learning about Australian culture benefit greatly from being placed in our caring homestays.
Students wishing to study at our College complete their 20-Week course for English As An Additional Language (EAL) in our on-site language centre. When they begin their mainstream subjects, we continue on-going EAL support, which continues for the duration of their stay at our College. Our EAL Staff are qualified in the teaching of EAL and are very experienced at all levels of language proficiency.
Once enrolled, our students attend a one-day Orientation Program. This may include purchase of textbooks and uniform with the International Student Co-ordinator, as well as a walking tour of the local area and the transport links close to the school. After this program, students participate in mainstream subjects from their first school day. They begin to learn about Australian school culture and to make friends with local students, as well as using their new English skills straight away! They accompany their new classmates on camps and excursions, and can participate in the sports, music and performing arts programs of the College.
If students are studying at junior levels, they will undertake a combined course of core subjects such as English, Mathematics and Science, and elective subjects such as Art, Food Technology and Drama.
If the students are studying in Years 11 and 12, they will be enrolled in the Victorian Certificate of Education – the VCE. They will undertake a number of VCE units each year to obtain their VCE qualification at the end of Year 12, which will enable them to study at universities in Victoria and other states of Australia if they achieve good results. Our International students in past years have achieved very pleasing results in Year 12, gaining places to study in a range of Australian universities such as The University of Melbourne, Monash University (Melbourne), and Macquarie University in Sydney. They have enrolled in a variety of courses, for example, Actuarial Studies, Engineering, Commerce, Accounting and Marketing.
At Mordialloc College, International students can feel assured they will participate in quality educational programs. A notable feature of our College is the smart College uniform that all students wear, including our International students. The uniform features our logo, proudly displaying our college motto, “Veho Spes Juventutis” – “I carry the Hopes of Youth”.
